BLOODY GULCH - Securing Carentan

Airsoft/Milsim Event

Location:
Red Alert (Reading) - RG7 6SX

Story:

When the 101st Airborne entered the town of Carentan on June 12, 1944, after heavy fighting on the two previous days, they met relatively light resistance. The bulk of the the 6th Fallschirmjäger Regiment had withdrawn to the southwest the previous night after a heavy Allied naval and artillery bombardment. Both sides realized the importance of the town: for the Americans, it was a link between Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, and would provide a base for further attacks deeper into German-occupied France. For the Germans, recapturing Carentan would be the first step towards driving a wedge between the two U.S. landing beaches, severely disrupting and possibly even destroying the Allied invasion.

The remnants of the 6th Fallschirmjäger resupplied and reinforced by assault guns and Panzergrenadiers of the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division counterattacked northeast towards Carentan at dawn on June 13, just as the 506th and 501st PIR were attacking southwest to enlarge the American defensive perimeter around the town. The 506th took the brunt of the attack, outnumbered and outgunned paratroopers were pushed almost back to the outskirts of the town.

Under intense German fire, F Company of the 506th's left flank broke and fell back. This exposed D Company's right flank, who also fell back, leaving E Company all alone.

Objectives:

  • HOLD – E Company 506 must now HOLD that line until 2nd Armoured and 29th Infantry arrives. You MUST HOLD that line!

  • BREAK THROUGH – 6th Fallschirmjäger and 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division must counterattack Carentan in order to drive a wedge between allied forces trying to link up from Utah and Omaha.

Story:

This story begins in a village in England, not the type of village you’ve ever seen, but a strange and unsightly place that sprung up almost overnight. It’s a shanty town, its building fashioned entirely from canvas, heavy boxes and shipping crates used in transporting thousands of gliders from the United States. It was a growing community. A glider moved out of its crate there was us. impatient tenants waiting to move in and set up our weapons, ammo, washing. It was our housekeeping.

And everyone was in town for one purpose. To make the big jump, the jump that would carry them not only over the English Channel but over a wall made out of steel and concrete. Our target is Normandy

Top Brass wants us to be dropped deep into German territory, St. Marie Dumont. After months of training, with no combat experience, we are heroes in the making. We have learned from our NCO’s, now we were ready.

DATES - 10th December 2021

GOOSE GREEN - Darwin Hill

Airsoft/Milsim Event

Location:
Pathfinder Airsoft, Aberdulais, SA10 8

Story:

The Battle of Goose Green was an engagement between British and Argentine forces on 28 and 29 May 1982 during the Falklands War. Located on East Falkland's central isthmus, the settlement of Goose Green was the site of an airfield. Argentine forces were in a well-defended position, within striking distance of San Carlos Water, where the British task force had made its amphibious landing.

The main body of the British assault force was the 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 Para), commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Jones. BBC radio broadcast news of the imminent attack on Goose Green. Knowing that this had likely forewarned the Argentinian defenders, the broadcast provoked immediate criticism from Jones and other British personnel.

After the attack began in the early hours of 28 May 1982, the 2nd Parachute Battalion advance was stalled by fixed trenches with interlocking fields of fire. Jones was killed during a solo charge on an enemy machine-gun post. The Argentinian garrison agreed to a ceasefire and formally surrendered the following morning. As a result of their actions, both Jones and his successor as commanding officer of the 2nd Parachute Battalion, Major Chris Keeble, were awarded medals: Jones received a posthumous Victoria Cross and Keeble received the Distinguished Service Order.

Objectives:

  • Britian – Goose Green isthmus must be taken in order for the British to control the control access to the entire Lafonia and thus a significant portion of East Falkland.

  • Argentina – The defending Argentine forces, known as Task Force Mercedes, will have to defend Darwin hill from the oncoming British Airborne Infantry!
