True Story:
The Battle of the Bulge: The Defence of the Salm River Sector (December 1944)
During the Ardennes Offensive, the US XVIII Airborne Corps (under Maj. Gen. Matthew Ridgway) was rushed to hold the northern shoulder of the Bulge. The corps commanded both American airborne units and attached British formations.
- The Units: 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (US 82nd Airborne) operating in direct line-contact with the 2nd Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (British 6th Airlanding Brigade / 6th Airborne).
- The Tactical Level: Battalion and Company frontage tie-ins (right on the boundary lines).
- The Combat: Positioned around Trois-Ponts and along the Salm River, American and British airborne companies were holding contiguous defensive lines against the 1st SS Panzer Division ‘Leibstandarte’.
- The Close Proximity: Company commanders from the 505th PIR and the Ox & Bucks established joint outpost lines (OPs) and listening posts (LPs) together. They coordinated overlapping machine-gun arcs of fire across company boundaries, shared artillery observer net frequencies, and conducted joint combat patrols into the dense Ardennes woods to secure the gap between their positions.
